Cloud OTDR: The OTDR for remote fiber optic measurements

The CloudOTDR is an advanced OTDR measurement system that takes the traditional way of fiber network measurement into a new era. This smart measurement system is installed at a central location within your fiber network. The innovative cloud software takes over the measurement process, allowing remote technicians to perform measurements and monitoring independently. This minimizes the need for physical presence in a POP or OAP, for example, and allows for more efficient maintenance, faster fault detection and eliminates network manipulation.

The CloudODTR for remote fiber optic measurement

Installing and maintaining fiber optic networks, such as FTTH (Fiber to the Home) and other broadband infrastructures, is a process where precision and efficiency are essential. Traditionally, measurements are performed manually by a measurement technician in collaboration with one or more HAS engineers. This requires physical presence at multiple locations simultaneously.

The CloudOTDR provides an innovative solution for efficient and error-free fiber optic measurements. By installing the CloudOTDR centrally, for example in a Point of Presence (POP) or Optical Access Point (OAP), remote measurements can be taken for a minimum of 60 to a maximum of 144 homes.

Once installed, the CloudOTDR performs a connector check. Only when the cloud software confirms that all connections are correct is the installation completed and the technician can leave the central location. The equipment operates completely autonomously and eliminates the need for further physical presence at the POP location.

After this, technicians can start a measurement independently, by connecting a pre-tensioning reel at the house and starting the measurement via the app ( suitable for Apple/Android). In the measurement software, the required measurement values are preset in accordance with PVE. This prevents network manipulation and ensures that the technician can perform the measurement independently.

The CloudOTDR for fiber optic monitoring

The CloudOTDR is a multifunctional system that not only performs final measurements of fiber optic connections, but also provides continuous monitoring and fault detection in various network environments. This contributes to higher reliability and preventive network management.

What hardware does the CloudOTDR consist of?

The CloudOTDR is designed to be connected to a central location within your fiber network, such as a Point of Presence (POP). This measurement system can be simultaneously connected to 60 different fiber optics and can be expanded to more connections depending on need, up to a maximum of 720-homes. The CloudOTDR consists of three main components.

The mainframe

The mainframe is installed centrally and performs measurements and monitoring, then transmits the data to the cloud. It has multiple connections, including:

  • A power port for the mainframe
  • Power and communication ports for the optical mechanical switch
  • An antenna port for communication over the mobile (4G) network
  • A LAN connection for locations where no mobile network is available
  • An Auxiliary port for connecting a proprietary OTDR for independent fiber optic measurements

Optical mechanical switch

To the mainframe of the CloudOTDR you connect an optical mechanical switch. These switches act as an extension of the system and is intended for switching between fiber optic fibers at the front end. On each mainframe you can connect a direct optical switch, but in case of need a switch behind switch can also be placed.

Reels

Reels can be connected to the optical switch. These reels consist of 12 glass fibers of a specific length with connectors that can be connected to the ODF systems.

Key benefits of the CloudOTDR

  • No more need for permanent physical presence of a POP employee: The HAS employee performs the measurement independently from the home.
  • User-friendly and device-independent: Measurements can be easily performed via an app, available on various devices such as, Apple, Android and Windows.
  • Automatic synchronization of work orders: Addresses and measurement data are instantly updated in the cloud.
  • Efficient processing of measurement data: Data is automatically processed and stored for further analysis and reporting.
  • Low error rates and minimal manipulations: The probability of human error and network manipulation is greatly reduced.
  • Prevents MFD mismatch: Reliable measurements without interference or signal transmission anomalies.
  • Faster and optimized delivery: The entire process of construction, measurement and management is designed more efficiently.
  • Positive return-on-investment: Lower operating costs due to fewer physical operations and more efficient network monitoring.
