Product Category Rules reduce environmental impact in fiber optic industry
NLconnect has published two important Product Category Rules (PCRs). These rules are designed to achieve sustainable fiber optic products in the telecom industry. These PCRs provide manufacturers with a method, by which they can measure the environmental impact of fiber optic products.

This method has been developed in recent months by NLconnect, together with a working group consisting of the companies Adtran, Amadys (Netceed), Attema, BAM Telecom, Circet, Compose/Legrand, Dura-Line, Eurofiber, Genexis, Maunt, Netways Europe, Odido, Prysmian Group, TKF and TriNed. The PCRs are an important step in making the fiber optic market more sustainable.
Passive and active fiber optic products
PCRs are focused on both active and passive fiber optic products. They focus on various products such as cables, ducts, trays, modems and switches. They provide a framework for manufacturers and suppliers to look at and minimize the environmental impact of their products. All aspects are considered, namely raw material extraction, production processes, practical lifetime, maintenance and management, demolition, waste disposal and all logistics.
National and international standardization
NLconnect is committed to further standardization, not only nationally but also internationally. The goal is to have PCRs recognized as official standards, as this will ensure wider acceptance and use within the industry. To achieve this, NLconnect is working with FttH Council Europe and the ITU. With the publication of the Product Category Rules, NLconnect aims to play a leading role in reducing the carbon footprint of the fiber industry, in line with tightened European regulations and sustainability standards.
